Republican Blocks the Extension of Unemployment Insurance Benefits

The extension of unemployment insurance benefit has not yet passed. On Thursday afternoon, the House just failed to pass the extension unemployment insurance benefits for another three months. The results of vote was 258 to 154 and still lack for the two-thirds in order to reach the passing rate.

The Republicans had already sought to block the extension of benefits before. They argue that the spend should be offset by savings to other things.

The Maryland's Representative Steny Hoyer, Democratic majority leader, dropped a statement that his party will continue in pushing through of the extension when the lawmakers return on November 29. The benefits will have its expiration on November 30 if the extension is not passed.

“Today, Republicans blocked an extension of unemployment insurance for thousands of families who have lost jobs through no fault of their own,’ Mr. Hoyer said. “As a result, they can expect their insurance to begin to run out just after Thanksgiving weekend. Republicans’ opposition to this bill was bad for families across their own districts, and worse for our economy as a whole.”

“Just two weeks after the election, the Democratic Leadership is playing politics with people’s unemployment benefits,” Michael Steel, Mr. Boehner’s spokesman, told Fox News.
